March 24 Tuesday

Mar 24, 2020 from 05:30 PM to 06:30 PM
ERDL Meeting Room

Class size will be limited for this series so please call the Library @ 231-264-9979 to register. 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' by Betty Edwards was the inspiration for this class. To see with the right mind set we explore ways to change and challenge your visual perception with exercises from supplied worksheets that look at contours, negative space, and values. We look at perspective and learn to 'sight' which helps gauge distance and proportion more accurately. Class 1 - We explore why we have difficulty seeing what we want to draw. Look at materials available to artists, then do a grid and puzzle exercises. Class 2 - I have students do contour drawings. Then we look at light logic and shading. Class 3 - Negative space, patterns and composition exercises. Class 4 - Perspective and sighting exercises. All supplies are provided but you may bring some of your own. They were women before their time, taking on the romantic, yet dangerous and physically demanding job of tending to the beacons that protected the shoreline. In all, some 40 women have been identified who excelled in this profession over the years — dating back as early as the 1840s and as recent as present day. Nearly 70 images of keepers, their families and their lights make up this presentation. The program includes readings from newspapers and autobiographies, as well as handouts including the list of featured ladies and additional reading references for attendees. Several of these women are featured in the book "Michigan's Haunted Lighthouses" - from The History Press / Arcadia Publishing, written by the presenter and author Dianna Stampfler. Following the presentation, a book sale / signing will be offered. The book is $20 cash or $21.19 credit charge.
